The Science

The Science Behind Daily Dental Defense™

Your dog's mouth affects a lot more than their breath

Most of us think of dog breath as a smell problem. It's actually a health signal.

By the age of three, most dogs already have some form of dental disease. It's the single most common health issue in adult dogs, and the easiest to overlook, because it hides below the gumline where you can't see it.

And here's the part that surprises people: what starts in the mouth doesn't always stay there. When the gums get inflamed, bacteria can slip into the bloodstream and travel through the body. Vets have studied this for years, and the research keeps pointing to the same thing: dogs with gum disease are more likely to show strain on the heart, kidneys, and liver.

We want to be honest about what that means. A clean mouth is not a magic shield, and no supplement can promise a healthy heart. But the link is strong enough that vets now treat daily mouth care as part of keeping the whole dog healthy, not just a way to freshen breath. That's why we made this product.

Why most dental products don't fix the real problem

Brushing, dental chews, water additives. They all do the same one thing: scrape plaque off after it has already formed.

That's cleaning up the mess. It doesn't stop the mess from being made.

The mess starts with bacteria. Think of your dog's mouth like a garden. It's full of tiny living things, some helpful, some not. In a healthy mouth, the good ones keep the bad ones in check. But diet, age, and genetics can tip the balance and let the troublemakers take over.

When they do, three things happen:

  1. Sugar turns into acid. The bad bacteria feed on sugars in food and give off acid, which irritates the gums.
  2. Plaque builds up. They also create a sticky film on the teeth. Left alone, it hardens into tartar.
  3. Gums get irritated and breath turns bad. An out-of-balance mouth means sore gums, odor, and inflammation.

Scrubbing the surface never touches the bacteria causing all of this. Daily Dental Defense™ works on that root cause instead.

The garden approach: feed the good bacteria

Here's the simplest way to understand it.

A probiotic adds new bacteria. A prebiotic feeds the good bacteria that are already there.

Daily Dental Defense™ is a prebiotic. It doesn't scrub, and it doesn't try to kill anything. It gives the helpful bacteria in your dog's mouth what they need to thrive, so they can crowd out the ones behind acid, plaque, and bad breath. You're not attacking the garden. You're tending it.

The ingredient that does this is called Protektin™.

What Protektin™ is, and what it's actually made of

Protektin™ is a prebiotic technology developed by a company called Primal Therapies. To create it, their scientists screened more than 50 different classes of ingredients to find the ones that best support a healthy mouth. Most did little on their own. The winners worked far better together than any did alone.

Here's the elegant part. Not one of the ingredients in Daily Dental Defense™ is exotic. There are four, and they each play a simple role:

  • Citrus pectin is the natural, soothing fiber found in the peel of oranges. In human medicine it's an FDA-recognized ingredient for protecting and soothing irritated tissue in the mouth, it's Generally Recognized as Safe (GRAS), and it's approved by AAFCO for use in animal products. It also has a documented ability to make it harder for harmful bacteria to stick and settle.
  • L-Arginine is an amino acid, and here it acts as food for the good guys. It's a nutrient the beneficial bacteria can thrive on, helping them grow strong enough to crowd out the troublemakers.
  • Sodium bicarbonate is plain baking soda. It gently helps neutralize acids and keep the mouth's pH in a comfortable, balanced range.
  • Pyridoxine HCl (vitamin B6) is a common, everyday vitamin. In this combination, it's the piece that interrupts the sugar-to-acid reaction that irritates gums.

On their own, each does a little. Together, they do something none of them can alone. That synergy is what Primal patented, and it's the heart of Protektin™.

This is the same prebiotic technology found in the human dental products from Living Well, the mouthwash, toothpaste, and tooth powder that dentist Dr. Michelle Jorgensen created. Daily Dental Defense™ brings that same idea to your dog, in a version made for pets.

The scientist behind the technology

We didn't invent Protektin™, and we think that's a good thing. It was developed by Dr. Emily Stein, PhD, a microbiologist who spent years studying the oral microbiome and is recognized in the field as a specialist in this exact area. Her team's approach to oral care has earned industry recognition.

When Dr. Michelle went looking for the best possible way to support her own patients' oral health, and then her own dog's, this is the science she chose to build on. Real researchers, real testing, and a mechanism that makes sense.

Does it actually work? What the testing showed

Fair question. Here's what the research found, in plain terms.

What's backed by published, peer-reviewed science: The individual behavior of the key ingredient is well documented in the scientific literature. Pectin's ability to soothe oral tissue and to make it harder for harmful bacteria to attach and grow has been studied and published in peer-reviewed journals. That's the foundation the whole formula is built on.

What the manufacturer's own lab testing showed for the combination: When Primal tested the two ingredients together as Protektin™, they found it:

  • Stopped sugar from turning into acid. On its own, each ingredient did little. Together, they clearly prevented the acid spike that normally follows a sugary meal.
  • Cut plaque buildup by more than half in lab tests, after only a brief 15-minute exposure.
  • Was tested on real mouth bacteria taken from dogs, cats, and humans, not a stand-in.
  • Worked batch after batch, passing the same acid, plaque, and bacteria tests across three separate production runs.

We want to be straight with you about the difference. The ingredient science is published and independent. The results for the specific Protektin™ combination come from the manufacturer's own laboratory research and have not yet been through independent peer review. We'd rather tell you exactly where the evidence stands than blur the line.

Why it comes in beef liver

Simple: the best dental ingredient in the world is useless if your dog won't eat it. And if giving it is a daily wrestling match, you'll give up.

So we built Daily Dental Defense™ into a base of freeze-dried, New Zealand grass-fed beef liver, a treat dogs genuinely love. The liver is the tasty part. Protektin™ is the working part inside it.

You just sprinkle one scoop on their food once a day. Same scoop for every dog, big or small, because we're supporting the bacteria in the mouth, not dosing by body weight. Easy is the whole point, because with dental care, doing it every day is what makes the difference.

What to expect, and when

This isn't an instant polish. It works gradually as the balance in your dog's mouth improves. With daily use, here's what pet parents usually notice:

  • Fresher breath, often in the first 1 to 2 weeks
  • Healthier-looking gums, around 2 to 3 weeks
  • Cleaner teeth and less buildup, around 3 to 5 weeks

Every dog is different, so these aren't promises. But the pattern is consistent, and the key is simple: use it every day.

The bigger picture: more good years together

You can't brush your way to a longer life for your dog. But you can build one small daily habit that supports the part of their body vets keep tying back to overall health: the mouth.

That's the whole idea behind Longer Together. Fresher breath and cleaner teeth are what you'll notice first. More healthy time with your best friend is what you're really after, one scoop at a time.

A note on our claims and your vet

Daily Dental Defense™ is a dental-support supplement, not a medicine. It isn't intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease, including periodontal, heart, kidney, or liver disease, and it isn't a replacement for professional veterinary dental care. The oral-systemic connection described above is general veterinary science, not a claim about this product's effects. For hardened tartar, or if your pet has an ongoing health condition, your veterinarian is the best resource. Think of Daily Dental Defense™ as the easy everyday habit that supports your dog's oral health in between visits.
